So the mission statement, if you want to call it that, is “all borders are wrong, some are useful” (which is riffing on a line attributed to George Box)
If you spend any time around maps, you will often discover that there's stuff about borders that seems bizarre or unusual or just flat out wrong. Working out what happened and why it's ended up like this is often fun, for a deeply nerdy sense of the word “fun”.
Sometimes it's as simple as “someone screwed up a long time ago, and it's too annoying to fix”. Other times it's due to colonial powers drawing arbitrary lines on a map without paying close attention, and now it's going to be extremely complicated to fix it.
Borders are largely just stuff some guys (and yeah, it was almost always guys) made up at one point, and we're mostly stuck with them now.
This is going to be an occasional series of posts on weird little bits of maps. Initially I'll be writing about Australia, but will hopefully expand over time to cover other parts of the world. Even Belgium.
I hope the SA/Vic border also gets a run.
Bonus if you include the West End beer adverts from about 2013 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHx60MeE84I)
